Club Penguin Facebook – Privacy?
Posted by Loki Terry on June 19, 2013 under Other StuffI’m making this post to add to what Trainman1405 said on his Club Penguin Blog, CP Memories and also my thoughts about the privacy issues that could be involved.
As Trainman1405 said, the 3rd Club Penguin rule stated “Stay Safe Online: We do not tolerate the sharing of personal information like your real name, phone number, address , email or password.” Facebook is a place where talking is big and this isn’t moderated by the Club Penguin team. You shouldn’t be revealing personal information to anyone who you see online and that you don’t know in real life and is common sense as Trainman1405 had said however Facebook requires as a real name, age, where you live etc – all information Club Penguin’s rules state not to give.
If you commented on a wall post that Club Penguin posted, it would show your real name not your penguin name, however it’s typical as noticed on our Club Penguin CC facebook page, you will get people saying ‘Add me on Club Penguin I am Shield32’. That would then reveal themselves ingame and the identity of the person in the real world. Depending on the Facebook settings of children’s account (yes usually Facebook has settings placed in for minors (under 18) this wouldn’t reveal where they live however they would be still showing there name and picture.
Respecting Others & No Bad Words – two other rules Club Penguin has got, these comments aren’t moderated automatically and this could happen at any time and any point meaning it could be a while before they get removed, although Club Penguin have a Twitter, mentions are harder to see and aren’t clearly infront of you when you visit there page.
Another scenario that I have noticed is that on every page, people can post ‘comments’ on a page, in the ‘Posts by Others’ section. Usually this could be ‘spam’ comments and advertising 3rd party products, which Club Penguin would need to monitor.
The reality is, is that yes children these days use Facebook and can make accounts separately for there gaming name but some people don’t do that and use there real Facebook and have accurate information about there age, live, email etc and if they are under 18 and have it set like that they would have the restrictions in place that Facebook has. However some people don’t do this and they put that they are older than they actually are, this would mean that they wouldn’t have the restrictions Facebook has set if they were a minor and more information can then be revealed about themselves.
Club Penguin mentioned that the page is for ages 13 and up which has been noted however Twitter as well has no moderation and yes the team I’ve noticed on Twitter have blocked individuals that mention something bad however Facebook is another social media website that is huge and the majority of the comments are right in front of the screen. However when you go on Club Penguin’s Twitter, mentions or #hashtags aren’t visible on there page, meaning it’s clear from anything bad.
As you can see for Club Penguin’s YouTube channel, all comments are moderated.
I agree with Trainman1405, Club Penguin wants to get more ‘social media’ to the game and wants to get more attention to the virtual world. Club Penguin has a page for parents, this is secure, more valuable to parents to see what there kids are doing etc. The World Wide Web has changed over years and each year there are risks upon yourself of how much personal information you give out, all I’m suggesting is that you stay safe and this posts just mentions the risks out there.
You can like the Club Penguin Facebook page if you have an account (13+) but remember the risks that are involved if you share, like or comment on their posts. You could setup an account where it’s just for Club Penguin which I have done. This would mean you wouldn’t be sharing personal details about yourself.
This is my thoughts on this, I like the idea of getting the game out there to another social media websites but how about the privacy of the users? – what are your opinions?
Same with their instagram. Many people left innapropriate comments that they cannot moderate, although they can be blocked. club Penguin should really limit their social media
