Calypso was chatting with our good friend, Viper after she stumbled on an article from November 2010, which was talking about a brand new species of monkey.
This is what Calypso had to say:
This type of monkey was discovered in Burma (also called Myanmar) so it has been named the Burmese snub-nosed monkey. A strange fact about these monkeys is that when it rains they huddle together, put their heads between their legs…and sneeze!
Why do they sneeze? Well it’s thought that it’s because of their upturned nose, which catches the rain as it falls — that’s why they like to keep their heads down when it’s wet 🙂
Although this monkey has just just been discovered, the population is very small and they are highly endangered.
Now the picture above is NOT a picture of a Burmese snub-nosed monkey, but its cousin, the Golden snub-nosed monkey. Can you believe that although a few researchers have seen these monkeys and noticed their actions, there don’t seem to be any photos of them? Did any of them actually bring a camera!?? Hehe. Crazy, right?
So here is an artist’s impression of what the Burmese snub-nosed monkey looks like:
Wow I never heard of the new species of monkeys I find it really cool, how about you? – Leave your comments and let me know!
